Sunday Parliamentary Elections Begin in Switzerland

The citizens of Switzerland will go to the polls on Sunday to elect members of their bicameral legislature, the Federal Assembly, for a four-year term.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The polls are opening on Sunday morning and will close at midnight.

The voting is also held in each Swiss canton either via postal mail or over the Internet.

The electorate is choosing between a total of 11 political parties.

The main rivals in the parliamentary race are the ruling right-wing Swiss People's Party (SVP), the Social Democratic Party (SP), Free Democratic Party, the Liberal Party and the Christian Democratic People's Party.

According to the averaged national opinion polls, the SVP is expected to secure support of about 29 percent of voters, compared to 18.4 percent for the Social Democratic Party, whereas the Free Democratic Party and the Liberals, respectively, may gain 15.8 percent, each.

The Christian Democratic People's Party has the chance to get 11.4 percent in the current elections.

Some 5.2 million Swiss nationals are eligible to vote in the country, where the total population is about 8 million people.
