US Doesn’t Know How to Respond to Russia’s Operation in Syria
LIMA (Sputnik) – The United States, Russia and relevant parties in the region should play a role in finding a peaceful solution to the Syrian conflict, Germany's senior economic cooperation official told Sputnik.

Parliamentary State Secretary Thomas Silberhorn's comments were made in response to a query on what is needed to be done immediately to address the current refugee crisis in Europe.

"What is urgently needed now is a clear commitment of the international community and of the relevant actors in the region, including the United States and Russia, and the United Nations to come to a peaceful agreement and to [pave] the way for peaceful change," Silberhorn stated on the margins of the IMF and World Bank annual meeting in Lima, Peru.

The Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development official stressed that the current refugee crisis cannot be adequately addressed without solving "the root sources of the civil war in Syria," and finding a political solution to the conflict.

"In this context, it is on the one side positive development that Russia and the United States and other relevant actors are discussing now how to proceed," Silberhorn concluded.

On the other hand, the official urged the countries to be "very careful not to worsen the situation, but to urge all the actors in the region to be part of peaceful solution."

Russia Acts in Accordance With Int’l Law in Syria, Unlike US-Led Coalition
Syria has been in a state of civil war since 2011, with the army loyal to President Bashar Assad fighting several opposition factions and numerous extremist militant groups, including Islamic State (ISIL) and the Nusra Front.

A US-led coalition has been bombing ISIL terrorist positions in Syria since 2014 without the approval of the UN Security Council or the Syrian authorities.

The Russian military launched operations targeting terrorist positions in Syria in late September at Assad’s request.

US and Russian defense officials have held two video conferences on deconfliction efforts, and agreed to conduct another one.
