Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov met in Paris with the chairman of the Syrian Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD), Salih Muslim, to discuss the situation in the country, Russian Foreign Ministry said Friday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — "The central topic of the talks was the development of the situation in Syria and around it with a focus on the task of consolidating the efforts to counter the threat posed by the Islamic State and other terrorist organizations and promote a political settlement of the Syrian crisis," the ministry's statement said.

Russia has been promoting political settlement of the Syrian civil war since its beginning in 2011 and has hosted two rounds of intra-Syrian talks in Moscow.

Since September 2014, a US-led coalition has been bombing Islamic State positions in Syria without the approval of the UN Security Council or Syrian authorities.

On September 30, Russia began precision airstrikes against Islamic State targets in Syria, following a request from Syrian President Bashar Assad.

International law permits the use of force in a foreign country only if it has been authorized by the UN Security Council, as an act of self-defense, or at the request of the country’s authorities.
