The entire international community, including the United States and the European Union, will gain from establishing warm political relations with Russia, Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel told newspaper Le Soir in an interview.

Michel had a chance to briefly meet with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov during the UN General Assembly meeting in New York earlier this week.

"I'm totally convinced that the world will gain from a political dialogue with Russia, including both Europe and the United States," Michel told Le Soir.

The Prime Minister added that although there are some differences of opinion between the West and Russia on several issues, a mutual understanding has to be found, especially considering that Russia is in the immediate vicinity of the EU.

Although Belgium is a small nation at the heart Europe, it has a longstanding tradition of conducting successful diplomacy and one of the best diplomatic networks in the world, Michel said. That's why everyone in the world carefully listens what Belgium has to say.

"We're taken seriously because we're a reliable, loyal, because we have produced [great] personalities in the past, including the first President of the UN General Assembly Paul-Henri Spaak," Michel proudly reminded.
