NEW YORK (Sputnik) Russian President Vladimir Putin will hold a bilateral meeting with Cuban leader Raul Castro during the UN General Assembly, according to the Russian president’s itinerary.

“A large-scale trilateral project is in the works with Russia, Cuba, and the United Arab Emirates on creating a large transportation hub, including the modernization of the Mariel sea port and the construction of a modern international airbase with a cargo terminal in San Antonio de los Banos,” Putin’s itinerary reads.

The 70th jubilee session of the UN General Assembly officially kicked off in New York City — the UN Headquarters — on September 15.

The Russian leader is set to address the UN General Assembly later in the day.

Cuba and Russia have enjoyed warm relations, dating back to Soviet times. According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, Moscow and Havana are preparing large-scale joint projects in the fields of energy and civil aviation, as well as a program to modernize Cuban power plants.
