MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The January 2014 Geneva II Conference on Syria failed to yield significant results with Moscow taking the initiative to host two rounds of Syrian peace talks in 2015.
“Only Moscow 3 may become a platform where all participants in the process of Syrian reconciliation will be able to meet to agree on the preparation for Geneva 3 [negotiations]," Mahmoud Marai said.
He added that “neither Cairo nor Saudi Arabia nor Astana qualify for this status."
Syria has been in a state of civil war since a 2011 political collapse. Government forces have been fighting on multiple fronts, including against the Islamic State and Nusra Front.
In July, Moscow expressed its willingness to host the third round of intra-Syrian peace talks. The date of the new round of consultations has not yet been determined.
