MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Finnish government earlier announced that it would reduce holidays for state employees, cut pay supplements, sick leave benefits and holiday payments in order to boost country’s economic growth after several years of problems in this sphere.
Finnish newspaper Etela-Saimaa reported that thousands of people gathered on Friday on the Helsinki Railway Square within the national strike protesting against cutting payments and compensations to workers.
The protest was organized by three major country’s trade unions: Akava, SAK and STTK. According to the country’s media, the trade unions succeeded to call to the streets about 300,000 people across the country in a day.
The strike affected domestic flights, ferry traffic, postal and educational services in the country. Workers from metal and wood-processing factories that play significant role in country’s economy also took part in the strike.
