The Palestinian flag will be raised outside the United Nations headquarters for Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas’ speech there in two weeks, the nation’s permanent observer at the UN said Tuesday.

UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) — Palestine, a non-member observer state at the United Nations, was given the permit alongside the Vatican City State in a UN resolution last Thursday.

Riyad Mansour, the Palestinian permanent observer at the UN, praised the decision as a prominent day for the nation that is struggling for its international recognition.

The flag-raising ceremony is scheduled for early Wednesday, September 30. A Middle East Quartet, comprising Russia, the United States, the European Union and the United Nations, vying for Israeli-Palestinian reconciliation, will also meet in New York that day.

Palestine gained observer state status in the United Nations in 2012 and has been seeking a full member status to the discontent of Israel and the United States.
