The United Nations claimed that the Middle East Quartet of foreign ministers to settle Israeli-Palestinian conflict was agreed to meet on September 30.

UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) – The foreign ministers of the Middle East Quartet on Israeli-Palestinian settlement will meet on September 30, the United Nations confirmed on Friday.

EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said earlier that UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon had sent invitation letters to the foreign ministers of Russia, the United States, the European Union and the United Nations.

"The Spokesman can confirm that the Secretary-General will be hosting a Principals’ meeting of the Quartet on 30 September in New York, on the margins of the General Assembly," a UN note to correspondents said.

The UN also corroborated Mogherini’s earlier announcement that Ban had invited the foreign ministers of Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, as well as the secretary general of the League of Arab States.

The Quartet, aiming to mediate the peace process in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, was established in 2002.

Palestine seeks to create an independent state on the territories occupied by Israel since 1967 Six-Day War.

In 2014, the UN Security Council was unable to pass a resolution to create the Palestinian state, blocked by the United States. However, almost 70 percent of UN member states support the Palestinian statehood.

The conflict escalated again in July 2014 after Israel launched a military operation named Operation Protective Edge against Hamas forces in Gaza. On August 26, Israel and Palestinian armed groups agreed on a ceasefire following 50 days of military operations.
