Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday congratulated Indian President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the country’s Independence Day, the Kremlin press service said in a statement.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Putin said that bilateral relations between Russia and India had reached the level of a special strategic partnership.

He added that the cooperation between the two countries was expected to deepen as India had initiated a process of joining the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.

“In his message, the Russian leader highly assessed India’s achievements in the socioeconomic, science and technology, and humanitarian spheres in the decades of its independent development, as well as the authority the nation gained in the international arena,” the statement said.

On August 15, India celebrates its 69th Independence Day after winning the independence from the British Empire in 1947.
