MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s recent apology for Tokyo’s aggression during World War II loses any meaning as long as parliament discusses "laws of war," Japanese former Deputy Finance Minister Daisuke Kotegawa told Sputnik Japan Friday.
"Today's speech by Abe will not even slightly affect Japanese politics. But what is really important from a political point of view, is the amendments to the defense bills, which are now being discussed in parliament," Kotegawa said.
The Japanese opposition has termed the said laws the "laws of war," he added, stressing that the amendments are really worthy of attention.
Japan's parliament is debating security bills that would allow Japanese troops to fight abroad for the first time since World War II. The controversial amendment to the Constitution has faced significant popular and parliamentary opposition.
