MOSCOW (Sputnik), Daria Chernyshova – The UN Security Council will vote on whether to set up a tribunal to investigate and prosecute those responsible for the Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 crash in eastern Ukraine on Wednesday, a spokeswoman for the Permanent Mission of New Zealand to the United Nations told Sputnik Tuesday.
Earlier in July, Malaysia submitted a draft resolution to the UN Security Council, proposing that an independent tribunal on the plane crash be established. The initiative was backed by Australia, Belgium, the Netherlands and Ukraine.
"Action on the draft resolution is scheduled for Wednesday 29 July at 3pm (New York time) [19:00 GMT]," Nicola Garvey told Sputnik.
Garvey said that New Zealand would not comment on the issue, as the country is currently presiding over the UN Security Council.
The following day, Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said Canberra would not tolerate a veto in the UNSC, and urged no delays in passing the resolution.
Flight MH17 was en route to Kuala Lumpur from Amsterdam when it came down in southeastern Ukraine on July 17, 2014, killing all 298 people on board the aircraft, mostly Dutch citizens. Local militia and Kiev forces have blamed each other for the crash.
Following the crash, the Dutch Safety Board was tasked with investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident.
