MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Cyprus has been divided in half since 1974, when Turkish troops occupied the northern part of the island, and proclaimed the TRNC, recognized only by Turkey, in 1983.
“We had a very good long meeting with the [Cypriot] President [Nicos Anastasiades], obviously passing on all our European support from the European Union for the talks in view of a settlement of the Cyprus issue and recognizing his leadership and his commitment in this respect,” Mogherini said after meeting the leaders of both countries.
The latest round of peace talks began May 15, when Anastasiades and his TRNC counterpart Mustafa Akıncı removed visa requirements between the two territories as a goodwill gesture and step toward reunification.
