French lawmaker Jacques Myard described Ukraine's bid for NATO membership as a provocation and said that Kiev does not need to join the Alliance.

MOSCOW (Sputnik), Svetlana Alexandrova – Ukraine’s bid for full membership of the NATO military bloc is simply a provocation, French lawmaker Jacques Myard told Sputnik Thursday.

"Ukraine doesn’t need to join NATO. And to ask for it's just provocative," Myard said.

Kiev authorities are actively seeking NATO membership. In November 2014, President Petro Poroshenko said that Ukraine should hold a referendum by 2020 to decide on whether the country should join the North Atlantic alliance or not.

In December 2014, the Ukrainian parliament voted to scrap the country’s non-aligned status, clearing the way for the country to apply for NATO membership.

On July 1, the Ukrainian parliament ratified a memorandum on cooperation in communications and reconnaissance with the bloc.

NATO officials have repeatedly stated that the country must carry out necessary reforms and tackle its internal crisis before applying for membership.
