Russia is ready to strengthen its cooperation with Iran in countering terrorism, including the Islamic State militant group, the Russian Foreign Ministry's new challenges and threats department director Ilya Rogachev said Monday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Earlier on Monday, the UN Security Council approved a resolution on the Iranian nuclear program that would gradually lift sanctions imposed on Iran and let the country play a more active role in the region.

“We can develop anti-terror cooperation with Iran, first of all, in the Middle East region. The notorious international terrorist organization as Islamic State can be and has to be the object of our cooperation with Iran," Rogachev told RIA Novosti.

ISIL is a terrorist group that declared a caliphate on large areas of northern Syria and Iraq it seized over the past year. The group has established sharia law on the occupied territories, punishing people discordant with their policy by inflicting appalling human rights atrocities posted online.
