Economic sanctions should not be used in international relations, Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff told RT in a Thursday interview.

UFA (Sputnik) — Since the Ukrainian conflict escalated in April 2014, the European Union, the United States and their allies have imposed a number of economic sanctions against Moscow, blaming it for interfering in Ukraine’s internal affairs. Russia has repeatedly denied these allegations, calling the policy of sanctions ineffective.

“In Brazil we are against any policy based on sanctions. … We do not believe in sanctions as a solution for whatsoever possible case.”

She added that Latin American states have a very negative history of being sanctioned and provided an example of the sanctions imposed on Cuba.

“Sanctions, instead of punishing only the governments, punish the population and this is inconceivable.”

She pointed out that Brazil supports Russia in claims that the Western economic sanctions are counterproductive.
