MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Russia confirmed its position during the conversation, the Kremlin spokesman said.

Obama said on Monday that he believed that the situation in Syria could only be regulated by forming a new government without President Bashar Assad.

The US president added that he voiced his views on the matter in a telephone conversation with his Russian counterpart.

"Indeed, an exchange of opinions on this matter took place. The Russian position is well known, and it was voiced again by the president during this conversation," Peskov told journalists.

Russia believes that Assad is the legitimate president of Syria, and that the people of Syria should be able to choose their government and leaders without outside intervention.
