Helsinki does not consider itself a suitable mediator between the West and Russia in the Ukraine talks, Finnish President Sauli Niinisto said Monday.

HELSINKI (Sputnik), Svetlana Alexandrova – Niinisto was speaking at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE PA) session underway in Helsinki.

“Finland is not trying to be the solution maker here. No and this is specifically when we talk about Ukraine. So we have to keep in mind that Finland is a member of the EU… So Finland is from another camp so the role of some kind of mediation here for Finland is not very suitable,” the president said.

Helsinki is working to keep West-Russia relations alive and trying to act as a bridge in this regard, Niinisto added.

An OSCE Parliamentary Assembly meeting in Helsinki is taking place on July 5-9. The Russian delegation is not participating because they were denied visas by the Finnish authorities.
