'Days of Eurocentric World are Long Gone' - Finnish President

At a time when the world is no longer Eurocentric, Europe cannot be an influential global contributor unless it preserves order within its ranks, Finnish President Sauli Niinisto said Monday.

HELSINKI (Sputnik), Svetlana Alexnadrova — The Finnish president’s comments come a day after Greece voted "no" in a referendum on a bailout plan proposed by its international creditors, which has not served to quell speculation about Greece’s possible exit from the Eurozone amid the country’s financial crisis.

"The days of a Eurocentric world are long gone. On a global scale the Eurocentric community remains the major contributor. However, it can't expect to be a very influential contributor if it can’t keep its own house in order," Niinisto said at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE PA) session underway in Helsinki.

Europe might also face a so-called Brexit, with the United Kingdom ready to hold a referendum on the question of the country’s membership of the European Union by 2017.

Greece is struggling to restructure its debt and get better conditions for debt repayment, while the United Kingdom seeks to renegotiate the system of contributions to the bloc's budget and achieve greater control over migration policy.
