Latvia and NATO are not regarding Russia as an enemy, Latvia’s newly elected president, Raimonds Vejonis, told the local LTV7 television Friday.

RIGA, June 12 (Sputnik) – Media reports earlier in June suggested that the United States was pondering options to counter Russia's alleged involvement in the Ukrainian conflict, including deploying land-based missile systems in Europe capable of threatening Russia’s nuclear potential.

"We have never considered it [regarding Russia as an enemy]… We are primarily thinking about how we can maintain security in the region. But it’s connected not only with Russia, but with the activity of, for example, Islamic State militants."

He said the deployment of US missiles in Europe, that has recently been actively discussed, would not take place.

"Any deployment of any weapons must have a reason. I think such decisions will not be made," Vejonis said.
