WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — On June 6, 2015, “homophobic and transphobic thugs” launched an attack on the 2015 Kiev Pride March for Equality, according to the release.
“The attack against Ukraine’s LGBTI rights defenders should offend everyone who values equal rights,” Freedom House stated.
Many LGBTI Ukrainians marched for the same ideals they supported during the Euromaidan revolution, the release argued.
“Ukraine’s Revolution of Dignity will not have achieved its goals until all Ukrainian citizens are treated equally and respected for who they are, irrespective of their sexual orientation or gender identity.”
Freedom House is a watchdog organization that supports democratic change and monitors the status of freedom, democracy and human rights around the world.
Ukraine received a democracy score of 4.93 on a scale of 1 to 7, with 7 as the worst possible score, according to the 2014 Freedom House report.
