Greek PM Tsipras Eyes Compromise on Bailout Deal With Creditors

Greece is aiming for a fair and realistic compromise with its international creditors in its bailout deal, to put an end to the debt crisis, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said Wednesday.

ATHENS (Sputnik) — Speaking prior to his departure for Brussels, Tsipras said in a televised interview that Athens had issued a proposal for its creditors that included "a fair and mutually beneficial compromise that will put an end to the crisis in Europe."

The Greek prime minister is due to meet with European Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker in Brussels ahead of the next Greek debt payment on Friday.

On Monday, he met with the heads of the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund in Berlin where he put forth a plan to end the current stalemate in the bailout talks. The impasse was caused by the Greek government's refusal to continue with the austerity program introduced after the 2008 financial crisis.

Speaking in Athens on Wednesday, Tsipras urged Europe to show more unity.

"We need unity. We must avoid a split in Europe. I believe that Europe's political leadership will do what it must, that it will move toward realism."

Greek media reported earlier on Wednesday that the left-wing government in Athens was not prepared to repay $330 million to the IMF on Friday unless it receives a guarantee of a cash injection. Greece seeks to unlock a new bailout package or else it risks running out of cash in very soon.
