There is no plan to turn the BRICS association of emerging economies into a military alliance, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said Wednesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — BRICS members are not trying to force political development within the union, the minister noted.

"BRICS is a union of states driven by clearly understood national interests in all areas, and the desire to implement these interests through joint actions."

"There is no goal to turn BRICS into some sort of military group or alliance," Ryabkov said in an interview with Rossiya-24 television channel.

The BRICS group is a union of five economies, comprising Russia, Brazil, India, China and South Africa, which cooperate on a wide range of issues, including finance and energy. The group also works on the matters of international stability, including countering global terrorism.

Last month, Russia accepted presidency of BRICS and will host the organization's summit in early July.
