Vice President of the German Bundestag Johannes Singhammer has postponed his planned visit to Moscow after lawmaker Karl-Georg Wellmann announced he had been denied entry to Russia.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The Bundestag vice president was expected to attend several meetings in Russian Foreign Ministry. He specified that the visit would not take place until all the circumstances surrounding the incident with Wellmann were clarified.

"As the vice president of the Bundestag [German Parliament's Lower House], I can not accept that my colleagues are denied entry to Moscow without notice," Singhammer was quoted as saying by the Zeit newspaper.

Wellmann was denied entry to Russia without any explanation after landing at Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport on Sunday. According to German media, Wellmann spent the night at the airport before flying back to Berlin.

Relations between Russia and the European Union deteriorated over the Ukrainian crisis as the West imposed several rounds of economic sanctions against Russia, citing its alleged involvement in the conflict. A number of senior Russian officials were also blacklisted.
