Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pledged to keep a unified Jerusalem under Israel's sovereignty despite Palestinian claims to its eastern parts.

TEL AVIV (Sputnik) — Last week, the recently reelected prime minister formed his third consecutive and fourth total government coalition, consisting almost entirely of right-wing and religious parties opposed to the peace process and concessions to Palestinians.

Netanyahu confirmed his stance on one of the core issues in the Middle East peace process on Jerusalem Day, a national holiday marked Sunday on the anniversary of the city's reunification after the 1967 Six-Day War.

"Jerusalem will not become another city wounded and dismembered. We will keep forever a united Jerusalem under Israeli sovereignty."

According to the event celebrated under the Hebrew calendar, Israel recaptured East Jerusalem from the neighboring Arab nation of Jordan 48 years ago, declaring it Israel's united and undivided capital.

A number of nations do not recognize the city's annexation and insist its status must be determined in the course of Palestinian-Israeli peace talks.

In turn, Palestine seeks to establish East Jerusalem as its own independent state's capital as more members of the international community begin to recognize the Palestinian state.
