A diplomatic delegation from Cuba will meet with US officials in Washington next week to discuss normalizing relations and re-opening embassies, the State Department said in a press release.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — A US Embassy in Havana will allow the United States to more effectively promote US interests and values while increasing engagement with the Cuban people, the release explained.

“On May 21, Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs Roberta S. Jacobson will host a delegation from the Cuban government led by Josefina Vidal, Director General of the US Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs… [to] continue discussions on re-establishing diplomatic relations and re-opening embassies,” the release, issued on Thursday, said.

In December 2014, Obama announced his intention to normalize US-Cuba relations, which entails reopening the US Embassy in Havana and lifting trade and travel restrictions on Cuba.
