WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The Special Envoy will discuss with the governments’ officials the need for a sustainable political transition in Syria, which is seen by the United States as the only means to end the ongoing conflict in the country, according to the State Department.
“US Special Envoy to Syria Daniel Rubinstein will travel May 15-27 to Geneva, Moscow, Ankara, Istanbul, and Riyadh to participate in UN-led consultations on Syria,” the statement, issued on Thursday, said.
Rubinstein will also continue his engagement with the leadership of Syria’s moderate opposition.
“The United States remains firmly of the belief that [Syrian President] Bashar al-Assad has no role in Syria’s political future,’ the statement said.
Syria has been mired in civil war since 2011 as government forces loyal to Assad fight several opposition and Islamic militant groups, including the al-Nusra Front and the Islamic State.
