Ban Ki-moon, Poroshenko Agree on Minsk Peace Deal Implementation
MOSCOW (Sputnik) – UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon did not agree with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko on sending an international peacekeeping contingent to the country's east, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov said Thursday.

Earlier, a statement on the Ukrainian president's site said that Poroshenko and Ban agreed in a telephone conversation on steps to the possible deployment of an international peacekeeping contingent in eastern Ukraine.

"This was an incorrect statement of what happened during the conversation between Poroshenko and Ban Ki-moon. We specified this question and Ban Ki-moon didn't take any of these obligations or assurances upon himself," Gatilov told RIA Novosti.

According to Gatilov, this is the Secretary General is not eligible to make decisions on this particular issue.

"They probably discussed this issue during the conversation, but Ban Ki-moon, as far as we understand, didn't take on any obligations," he added.

The Russian diplomat noted that there was no need to deploy peacekeepers to the eastern Ukrainian Donbas region, as the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe mission was working there already. According to Gatilov, many UN Security Council members agree with that position.

Last month, Kiev requested that the UN Security Council and the EU Council deploy an international peacekeeping operation to Donbas, torn by conflict between Kiev and independence supporters. OSCE Secretary General Lamberto Zannier doubted that a UN mission would be more successful than that of the OSCE.

Russia has repeatedly stated that there was no need for the United Nations to deploy peacekeepers to eastern Ukraine.
