Washington's policy towards Ukraine and Yemen raises an issue of double standards.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The United States' open backing of the military operation in Yemen calls into question Washington's position on the government overthrow in Ukraine, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Thursday.

The United States provides intelligence, targeting and logistical support to a Saudi-led coalition that has been conducting airstrikes against Houthi rebels in Yemen. The official aim of the operation is to return displaced President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi to power.

"At the same time, Washington actively supports and even helped organize the anti-constitutional government overthrow in regard to Ukraine."

Former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych fled the country following mass pro-EU protests in the capital Kiev, in February 2014.

In April 2014, the Lugansk and Donetsk regions in eastern Ukraine declared independence from the interim government in Kiev, sparking an armed conflict that has left over 6,000 people dead, according to UN figures.
