Prior to his visit, Portman told the press that he intended to meet with Ukrainian officials to provide him “an update on the precise military situation.”
The Republican Senator is one of many US lawmakers who have called on US President Barack Obama and NATO leaders to provide military support for Kiev.
“Petro Poroshenko has particularly noted the need for sending the international peacekeeping mission ‘in order to ensure the stability to the peaceful process,’” the press release said on Thursday.
Poroshenko reportedly invited Portman to Kiev in order to shore up the “transatlantic solidarity for the support of Ukraine.”
According to the press release, Senator Portman “stands for the USA to be deeper involved in the process of ensuring the implementation of the Minsk agreements.”
Many nations have expressed opposition to a UN peacekeeping mission to handle the conflict in Eastern Ukraine within the European Union and among members of the Organization for Security Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).
The OSCE has been given an extended mandate and funding from its member states to monitor the Minsk peace process.
Portman travelled to Kiev as one of the founding members of the US Senate Ukraine Caucus, which was created in February 2015 to strengthen the military, political and economic ties between the United States and Ukraine.
