US President Barack Obama announced on Tuesday that he will act on the issue of removing Cuba from the list as soon as the State Department issues a recommendation.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The White House received the US State Department's recommendation on whether to remove Cuba from the State Sponsors of Terrorism list, the Department’s deputy spokesperson Jeff Rathke announced on Thursday.

“The White House has received the State Department recommendation,” Rathke said.

Rathke stressed that no details of the recommendation have been made public yet.

Cuba and the United States are negotiating to improve their diplomatic ties and removing Cuba’s Sponsor of Terrorism designation is one of the initial steps in the process along easing trade restrictions and potentially reopening the US embassy in Havana.

The United States imposed an embargo on Cuba in 1961 during the Cold War because of antagonism between Washington and the communist government in Havana.
