Participants of Iran Nuclear Talks to Make Press Statement Within Two Hours

The P5+1 mediators and Tehran are preparing to make a statement for press at Iran nuclear talks in Lausanne in the next few hours, the Swiss Foreign Ministry announced Thursday.

LAUSANNE (Sputnik) — A document, circulated among accredited journalists, does not specify the timeframe, but says that "a media event on nuclear talks with Iran will be held at the EPFL Rolex Learning Centre in Lausanne."

Earlier in the day, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Zarif said that the negotiators needed to resolve "sticking points" before making any statements before the press.

The negotiators said earlier in the week that they could move to Geneva to face the press.

Iran and P5+1 countries, comprising Russia, the United States, France, China, the United Kingdom and Germany, have been trying since November 2013 to reach a deal that would ensure the peaceful nature of Tehran's nuclear energy program.

The West, fearing that Iran could be developing nuclear weapons, wants Tehran to halt uranium enrichment and decrease the number of centrifuges in the country.

Tehran, in turn, wants Western sanctions imposed against Iran over its nuclear activities to be fully lifted as part of the deal with the P5+1.

The current round of talks in Lausanne started on March 19 and was originally scheduled to end on Sunday, before being first prolonged till Tuesday and then Thursday.

The negotiating sides were due to reach a framework agreement by the end-of-march deadline.

The deadline for reaching a final comprehensive agreement on Tehran's nuclear program has been postponed several times, with most recent one set for July 1, 2015.
