WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Crimea's secession from Ukraine took place after a new government was installed in Kiev through a coup in February, 2014, which alienated Crimea's majority Russian-speaking population of 2.4 million.
Crimea refused to recognize the legitimacy of the new government in Kiev, and voted in a Referendum in March 2014 to rejoin Russia. Ninety-six percent of the people participating in the Referendum chose to join Russia.
"Let's bring the OSCE [Organization of Security and Co-Operation in Europe], and let's have a very monitored election, and if the people of Crimea want to be Russian let them be Russian,” Rohrabacher stated on Thursday. “If they want to be Ukrainian, let them can be Ukrainian."
Rohrabacher emphasized that Ukraine should have a federalist system, and which the Eastern parts of the country that are "wary" of the Kiev government, should be given their own police, education and other elements.
