WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The Secretary General is visiting Washington, DC, but in a Wednesday press conference, Stoltenberg confirmed he was not invited to meet with Obama.
“Ambassador Rice thanked the NATO Secretary General for his strong leadership of the alliance at a critical period for European security, and was pleased to convey the President’s invitation for him to visit in May,” Meehan said on Thursday.
Meehan’s announcement came after Stoltenberg met with US National Security Advisor Susan Rice earlier on Thursday.
Stoltenberg, however, expressed appreciation for the US contribution to the Transatlantic Alliance, which, he said, amounts to approximately two-thirds of the total NATO defense spending.
Rice and Stoltenberg discussed Transatlantic security issues, the progress on commitments from NATO’s 2014 Wales Summit as well as plans for the next 2016 NATO Summit in Warsaw, according to the statement.
