GENEVA (Sputnik) — Moscow insists that cutting off all channels of support to radical Islamist groups such as the Islamic State or Al-Nusra Front is key to successful fight against global extremism and terrorism, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Monday.
"Our common goal should be joining efforts in the fight against extremism and terrorism in the Middle East and North Africa," Lavrov said during a high-level discussion in Geneva focused on protecting Christians around the world.
"But the key factor will be our common ability to cut off any channels of support to the Islamic State, the Al-Nusra Front or similar groups, with the use of existing UN Security Council mechanisms," Lavrov said.
