“The Normandy quartet did not discuss the deployment of peacekeepers to Ukraine,” the RSN radio station quoted him as saying.
According to the spokesman, the four leaders discussed the implementation of the recently-reached minsk agreement.
Late Wednesday night, the Ukrainian National Security and Defense Council's secretary Oleksandr Turchynov announced Kiev's plans to request the United Nations and the European Union to station peacekeepers along the line of contact between Kiev forces and Donbas independence supporters and on the border with Russia.
The Donetsk militia deputy commander said earlier on Thursday that the independence forces had nothing against the peacekeepers. However, the Donetsk negotiator Denis Pushilin said Kiev's initiative contradicted the new Minsk agreements.
Vladislav Deinego, representative of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic, said deployment of peacekeepers should only be discussed as a measure of last resort.
On February 12, the leaders of Russia, Germany, France and Ukraine negotiated a ceasefire deal between Kiev troops and Donbas militias. The set of measures agreed in Minsk also include the withdrawal of heavy troops from the line of contact and an all-for-all prisoners exchange.
