MINSK (Sputnik) — Donbas authorities are interested in the deployment of Russian or Belarusian peacekeepers in contested areas of eastern Ukraine, if such a decision is implemented as part of the new document on Ukrainian crisis resolution, a DPR leader said Wednesday.

"We are certainly interested in a peacekeeping contingent that would consist of Russian or possibly Belarusian peacekeepers," DPR parliament speaker Andrei Purgin said in an interview with Rossiya-24 television.

"That is if such an agreement is adopted," Purgin added.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian, Russian, French and German leaders of the so-called Normandy quartet continue to hold talks on Ukrainian reconciliation in the Belarusian capital Minsk.

According to the latest UN data, nearly 5,500 people have died and almost 13,000 have been wounded in hostilities raging through Ukraine's breakaway regions of Donetsk and Luhansk.

Since Kiev-led troops have engaged in armed conflict with local independence supporters last April, the warring sides reached a ceasefire deal in September.

However, tensions escalated in the first weeks of 2015, claiming the lives of more than 200 civilians in renewed fighting.
