    As part of China’s UN Security Council presidency, the council will hold an open meeting on February 23-24 to discuss compliance with the goals and principles of the UN charter.

    MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov may travel to New York in February to attend a ministerial meeting of the UN Security Council, a diplomatic source told RIA Novosti Friday.

    As part of China’s UN Security Council presidency, the council will hold an open meeting on February 23-24 to discuss compliance with the goals and principles of the UN charter.

    “States are invited to participate at a ministerial level. The issue of Lavrov’s visit is being considered,” the source said.

    The Security Council presidency rotates monthly based on alphabetical order of the 15 member states' English-language names.

    In addition to China, Russia, the United States, France and the United Kingdom, the five permanent members with veto powers, the UN Security Council includes 10 non-permanent members elected on a bi-annual basis.
