MOSCOW, January 20 (Sputnik) — Syrian National Coordination Committee has agreed to come to Moscow for talks with the Syrian government in late January, EFE agency has reported.
The head of the opposition committee, Hassan Abdel Azim, told the agency that this decision was made at the end of the past week.
He said that the goal of the committee was to "stop the suffering of Syrians that have already gone through four years of war and devastation."
On Monday, Badr Jamous, the vice president of the Syrian National Coalition, said that the coalition would not take part in the Moscow talks with the Syrian government, blaming the government of Bashar Assad for limiting the agenda of the meeting to the fight against terrorism and support for the Syrian army.
The negotiations in Moscow are scheduled to take place from January 26 to 29, and will see the participation of the Syrian government representatives, inner opposition parties and UN special envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura.
The Syrian government has been fighting diverse armed groups since 2011. Previous rounds of talks between the Bashar Assad government and the Syrian opposition were held in Geneva in 2012 and 2014, but the parties failed to reach an agreement.
