UNITED NATIONS, January 9 (Sputnik) – UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said Friday he was relieved that terrorists behind the attack on the French Charlie Hebdo magazine were killed by French authorities.
"I am relieved that these terrorists have been killed by the authorities of the French government," Ban Ki-moon said.
"Yesterday, I telephoned [French] President [Francois] Hollande and conveyed my messages again, expressing our condolences and also encouraging him to show courage in overcoming this tragedy and difficult situation," the UN secretary-general said.
Ban also called on the international community to respect the beliefs, traditions and religious views of different nations, urging for inclusive dialogue when addressing arising issues.
"Whatever the grievances may be, then all these differences of views should be addressed in a peaceful manner through dialogue. There is nothing which we cannot resolve – the differences of opinion – through dialogue," he said.
On Wednesday, alleged Islamic extremists opened fire in the office of the Paris-based Charlie Hebdo magazine, killing 12 people and injuring another 11. Two main suspects, brothers Cherif and Said Kouachi, were killed by the French police on Friday during a raid on a print shop in an industrial zone near the town of Dammartin-en-Goele north-east of Paris.
