EDINBURGH, December 17 (Sputnik), Mark Hirst – A EU resolution, passed on Wednesday, recognizing the state of Palestine "in principle" changes nothing, the Irish4Israel movement spokesperson told Sputnik.

"Does it really change anything? It seems to only reinforce the position that the EU has held for decades which is two states for two peoples. The recognition "in principle" has in reality been EU policy for many years. This is nothing new," the spokesperson said.

Last week the Irish Parliament, Dail Eireann, agreed a motion, recognizing the state of Palestine, following similar votes in Spain, the UK, France and Sweden.

"These votes are more about politicians gaining publicity for themselves," the movement's spokesperson told Sputnik. "They seem more interested in 15 minutes in the limelight than actually trying to bring genuine peace between Israelis and Palestinians".

The Irish4Israel movement spokesperson rejected fears the vote in the Irish Parliament might lead to a rise in anti-Semitism:

"I don't believe that is going to be an issue. Relations between Ireland and Israel have improved over the last few years and we expect that to continue".

The vote fell short of her expectations, but nonetheless represented a "step in the right direction," Martina Anderson, Member of the European Parliament representing Northern Ireland, said.

"For us this resolution does not go far enough, but it is to be welcomed as a principled step in the right direction," Anderson told Sputnik.

The resolution will give protection to the Palestinian territory, people and borders, Anderson added.

The resolution, agreed by the EU, came on the same day that the General Court of the European Union ruled that the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip, should be removed from the EU's list of terrorist organizations.
