Sanctions imposed on Iran is the key issue of Iranian nuclear talks, the Americans are insisting on a gradual reduction in sanctions against Iran, but Iran insists that all sanctions are lifted.

VIENNA, November 19 (Sputnik) – The United States needs to back down on its sanctions against Iran in order to reach an agreement on the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program, a source close to the Iranian delegation told Sputnik on Wednesday.

“Much depends now on US Secretary of State John Kerry’s visit now. An agreement depends on the Americans’ decisions of whether they will back down in regard to removing the sanctions,” the source said.

The source added that the Americans are currently insisting on a gradual reduction in sanctions against Iran, but Iran insists that all sanctions are lifted as soon as the agreement is signed.

The West and Israel have long been accusing Iran of attempting to develop nuclear weapons under the guise of a civilian nuclear program, while Tehran argues that its nuclear program is aimed at meeting the country's growing energy needs.

In November 2013, during talks in Geneva, the P5+1 group, comprising Russia, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, China and Germany, agreed to reach a deal with Tehran guaranteeing the peaceful nature of the Iranian nuclear program by July 2014. The deadline for the agreement was later postponed to November 24.
