Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev believes that Western sanctions against Russia need to be lifted and working relations should be restored.

NAYPYIDAW (Myanmar), November 13 (RIA Novosti) – Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev on Thursday said Western sanctions against Russia need to be lifted and a return to normal relations needs to be established.

“Sanctions simply need to be dropped, relations need to be returned to a normal working atmosphere, and we need to return to normal, reserved, and productive negotiations, then everything will become stable,” Medvedev said during the Ninth East Asia Summit in Myanmar’s (Burma) capital.

He added that he did not know when this would happen because “it doesn’t depend on us as we didn’t impose sanctions; this was the initiative of our partners”.

“[Sanctions] only bring discomfort. They hardly influence international relations,” Medvedev said.

Response Measures Against Western Sanctions May Be Prolonged by Russian Government

Responsive measures against Western sanctions may be prolonged by the Russian government but sooner or later they will be cancelled, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said Thursday.

“[The responsive measures] will be in place for a year, according to a presidential decree, but the government may cancel them earlier, and, actually, they can also be prolonged,” Medvedev said during the Ninth East Asia Summit in Myanmar’s (Burma) capital.

Medevedev added that the trade measures Russia imposed in response to Western sanctions would sooner or later be cancelled.

“It’s very obvious that they, of course, can also be cancelled,” he said.

He said that there are both positive and negative consequences to Russia’s responsive measures against Western sanctions for the Russian economy.

“These responsive measures have definite consequences. Most likely, not all of them are positive because we cannot instantly substitute an entire segment <…> but there is also a positive side: our people have started getting used to the fact that a large part of our foodstuffs consist of our own goods,” he said.

Medvedev also noted that once Russian responsive measures are lifted, not all the foreign producers will be able to return to the Russian market.

“If we talk about lifting these responsive measures <…>, not all of the foreign foodstuffs that were previously [in Russia] will return to the shelves,” he said.

In August, Russia was forced to respond to sanctions introduced by the West over Moscow’s alleged role in the Ukrainian crisis with a ban on certain food imports from the European Union, the United States, Canada, Australia and Norway. The list of banned products includes meat, poultry, fish, seafood, milk, dairy products and fruit and vegetables.
