MOSCOW, November 5 (RIA Novosti) – US politics is dominated by a two-party monopoly with those not belonging to the Democratic or the Republican camps having little chance of success, Ron Paul, former House of Representatives lawmaker for Texas, told the RT television channel.

"…here at home [in the United States], we don't have true Democracy. We have a monopoly of ideas that is controlled by the leaders of two parties. And they call it two parties, but it's really one philosophy," Paul said Tuesday, as Americans were voting in midterm elections.

"If a third party person gets anywhere along, they [Republicans and Democrats] are going to do everything they can to stop that from happening," Paul added, stressing that "this whole idea that a good candidate that's rating well in the polls can't get in the debate, that's where the corruption really is."

On Tuesday, Republicans seized control of the US Senate. If the party retains its majority in the House of Representatives, the United States will have a Republican-dominated Congress for the first time in eight years.

The Democrats have lost races in North Carolina, Colorado and Iowa – states that played a key role in US President Barack Obama's victory in the 2008 elections.

The 2014 US midterm elections sees 435 House seats, 36 Senate seats and 36 governorships up for grabs.
