MOSCOW, October 26 (RIA Novosti) - German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that she will not support the initiative of British Prime Minister David Cameron to limit the inflow of migrants from the European Union to the United Kingdom.
"Germany will not tamper with the fundamental principles of free movement in the EU," Merkel told the British Sunday Times newspaper.
On October 20 it was reported that Cameron is going to unveil his plan to limit the EU migration to UK before Christmas.
Seeking to address voters concerns about high levels of immigration, Cameron plans to limit the quantity of national insurance numbers available to low skilled immigrants, searching for a job in UK.
European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said that this proposal contradicts the principle of freedom of movement.
UK is a top immigrant destination in the EU and British Prime Minister repeatedly stated that the migrants are abusing the country's social welfare system and taking too many jobs while many Brits remain jobless. In particular he called for steps to ensure that the migrants are not receiving social benefits in two EU countries at the same time.
Cameron also promised to hold a referendum on continuing the British membership in the EU if the Conservatives win the 2015 elections and he remains prime minister. Cameron stated that he "would not be heartbroken" if UK leaves EU.
