TALLIN, October 8 (RIA Novosti) - The Estonian Parliament has rejected a proposal to hold a referendum on the much-debated Cohabitation Act, which includes state recognition of permanent same-sex partnerships, the press service of the Estonian Parliament reported on Wednesday.

According to the statement, the majority of the members of the Estonian parliament have voted against holding the proposed referendum on cohabitation. The voting was followed by the second reading of the bill. The third and final reading is scheduled for Thursday.

On Tuesday, the Estonian conservative Pro Patria and Res Publica Union (IRL) proposed a bill on holding a referendum on cohabitation on March 1, 2015 – the day of the country's next parliamentary elections.

Last week, Estonia's TNS Emor research company published the results of a recent poll, revealing that 67 percent of Estonians are against the state recognition of the same-sex marriages.

On Sunday, those standing for the protection of family values and against the law on cohabitation held a large rally in Estonian capital of Tallin.
