Latvian Elections Finished, Harmony Party Wins: Election Commission

The 12th election to the Parliament of Latvia, the Saeima have been declared valid, the winner is the Harmony party, the Central Election Commission said Sunday.

RIGA, October 5 (RIA Novosti) – The 12th election to the Parliament of Latvia, the Saeima have been declared valid, the winner is the Harmony party, the Central Election Commission said Sunday.

"The election took place," the head of the Central Election Commission, Arnis Tsimdars said at a press conference.

The CEC head also said that the votes at 1047 out of 1054 polling stations had been counted. The opposition party, Harmony (also referred to as Concord Party), gained 23.13 percent of the votes. The Unity Party took the second place with 21.76 percent, and the Union of Greens and Farmers came third with 19.62 percent.

Elections to the Saeima took place in Latvia on October 4. The winning party Harmony supports the Russian-speaking population of Latvia. Party leader Neil Ushakov in 2009 became the first mayor of Riga in the country. To date, he is considered the most popular politician in Latvia.
