MOSCOW, September 30 (RIA Novosti) - US President Barack Obama is set to speak with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi about economic growth, security issues and the situation in Syria and Iraq during Modi's first official visit to the United States, according to The Guardian.

Obama and Modi are expected to focus their talks on accelerating economic growth, boosting security cooperation, clean energy and climate change, among issues. The talks will also focus on the situation in Afghanistan, Syria and Iraq.

Modi's two-day visit will start with a dinner with Obama on Monday evening. Earlier, the arrival of the Indian prime minister was marked with thousands of Indian-Americans taking to the streets of New York to welcome Modi.

According to the newspaper, while the countries have developed closer military cooperation, economic ties between India and the United States have not been particularly strong, with Washington growing increasingly dissatisfied with India's unwillingness to open its economy to more foreign investment and address intellectual property complaints.

This week's visit gives a chance to the two leaders to start improving relations between the countries.

The visit itself can already be seen as an improvement, given that Modi was previously denied entry to the United States nearly a decade ago, when his visa application was rejected. The US president visited India in 2010 and called the US-India relations a "defining partnership" of the 21st century.
