MOSCOW, September 14 (RIA Novosti) - Nigel Farage, the leader of the UK Independence Party, has urged Queen Elizabeth II to speak in favor of the union and against Scotland’s independence ahead of the referendum scheduled for September 18, the Guardian reports.

Farage insisted that when the United Kingdom is under threat, the queen is “responsible” to make a statement. “Let's say we got to this Sunday, and let's say it was still 50/50 in the polls – I personally think she should say something, yes,” he said on Friday.

The politician insisted that the monarch has already once clearly stated her position on the breaking up of the country. In an address to parliament in 1977 the queen said that she could perfectly understand aspirations for autonomy but urged “to remind ourselves of the benefits which union has conferred, at home and in our international dealings, on the inhabitants of all parts of the United Kingdom,” as quoted by the Telegraph.

So far, Queen Elizabeth II has insisted that she will remain neutral and only people of Scotland can decide whether they want to stay within the union or opt for independence, according to the Buckingham Palace spokesman.

At the moment, polls indicate a close race. If the majority of Scots vote for independence, then on March 24, 2016 Scotland will secede from the United Kingdom.
