On October 27, a gunman opened fire inside a synagogue in Pittsburgh, killing 11 people and injuring six others, including police officers, according to the US authorities. The suspect, Robert Bowers, was detained and charged later in the day with 29 criminal counts.

According to charging documents made public Sunday, the suspect "wanted all Jews to die and also that they were committing genocide to his people." US Attorney General Jeff Sessions said federal prosecutors could seek the death penalty.
